Our Office Plant Voc Ratings Explained

There has never been a better time to go green than now, when the world faces a series of different environmental challenges. These can only be combated through united action, and although it may seem like an impossible task at times, in truth it is the collection of smaller decisions that will help to turn the tide on climate change. Images of pollution clearing in major cities while citizens were in lockdown last year are glimmers of hope to people all over the world. At Bidvest ExecuFlora, we’re committed to doing our part, and are proud that our plants contribute to a healthier planet. We’ve gone a step further to help by introducing VOC ratings, which we will outline here.

What Are Volatile Organic Compounds?

Volatile Organic Compounds (or VOCs) refer to organic chemicals that turn into a gas at room temperature. On the most fundamental level, these chemicals are the origin of air pollution. It’s not uncommon to find different companies referring to VOC levels and ratings as a way to measure and regulate how their products curb the release of these organic chemicals. This adds to the sustainability rating of the company, and also has a natural effect on how these products contribute to the wellbeing of the planet.

Our VOC Ratings Explained

At Bidvest ExecuFlora, we want to make it as simple as possible for our clients to understand the VOC levels of our individual plants. That’s why we’ve shifted towards a system of grading plants that have been specifically tested towards their efficiency in removing VOCs from the air. Our scale measures this from 1 to 10, with the former being ‘poor’ and the latter being ‘excellent’. These ratings are visible on individual plant product pages on our website, making it easy to compare different options before you decide what will work best for your office.

What Is Considered Low VOC?

Products that have less than 50 grams per liter of VOC are generally considered “low VOC”. This becomes important when buying cleaning products, paints, coatings and more. It is impossible to compare the benefits of plants relative to these specific products. Plants contribute in ways beyond just cleaning the air, including boosting morale in the office and encouraging wellbeing. The important thing is to learn more about VOCs in order to ask the right questions whenever you buy a plant, product or anything that may affect the environment.
